Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
